Who we are

Ancient Stone and the Steelworks: Forged by Unknown Metallurgy invites viewers to reconsider the craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian hard stone vessels through the lens of industrial ingenuity and mystery.

Our study examines the meticulous precision seen in predynastic and early dynastic stone vases. These vases are remarkable in their symmetry and finish that challenge assumptions about ancient toolkits.

Set against the iconic Wollongong Steelworks, the largest steelmaking facility of Australia, a site synonymous with technological determination and material mastery, we undertake contemporary analyses of finely worked Egyptian artefacts in mediums such as granite and diorite vessels that hint at systematic and possibly advanced techniques in stone turning and smoothing.

This presentation bridges epochs and continents.

These objects speak to an enduring human impulse to push the boundaries of material possibility, whether in the quarrying of rose granite, or the smelting of steel.

This discussion opens space to consider possible forgotten knowledge and technologies that once enabled remarkable levels of precision and material control.
